I delivered it to their son's historic home before it was taken to their home in Huntington Beach, CA.

Their son's very historic home. the house — along with everything around it — would be unrecognizable to the Mayfields who created the first version of it in 1849, not to mention the Creek Indians who attacked them repeatedly. The members of the Southerland Mayfield family are believed to be the first white people to settle in the Brentwood area, according to several local histories. At the time, Brentwood was mostly forest and the northeastern part was a hunting area for the Native Americans who were already there. Southerland (variously spelled Sutherlin and Sutherland) was killed by Creek Indians who kidnapped one of his children, George, and took him south to what is now Alabama. According to an account by the Brentwood Historical Commission, George’s flaming red hair “greatly fascinated the Indians” enough to save him from death and scalping. George didn’t get away from them until 10 or 12 years later and he made his way back to Brentwood and built a log cabin near the family’s first fort. His son, also named Southerland, completed the first version of today’s Mayfield House around 1849, on adjacent property that came to be bordered on its west side by Wilson Pike. The residence was a dogtrot-style house, having a central hallway with living spaces on each side that could be closed off with pocket doors to preserve the heat from the fireplaces in cold weather. This second Southerland Mayfield was a doctor who practiced in Brentwood for many years. His patients included Andrew Jackson (red-headed dad George had worked for Jackson as a guide and spy during the Indian Wars and the War of 1812).
